As you may know, the UIL Legislative Council passed changes to Section 1204 of the UIL Constitution and Contest Rules, including changes to the sports officials fee schedule. Shortly after these changes were passed, litigation filed by the Texas Association of Sports Officials (TASO) delayed implementation of the new rule. Most recently, the TASO case has been on appeal before the Austin Court of Appeals. During the course of the litigation, UIL has authorized use of the 2009 version of Section 1204, which has been located in the Appendix of the Constitution and Contest Rules.
During the regular legislative session, HB 1775 was passed into law; making the lawsuit moot and ultimately removing the legal obstacle to implementation of the changes approved by the UIL Legislative Council in 2009. On July 3, 2013, the Austin Court of Appeals granted the joint motion of the parties and dismissed the appeal. With the litigation obstacle removed, the new version of Section 1204 will now be in effect for the 2013-2014 school year.
The UIL registration process for team sports officials WILL NOT be implemented for the 2013-2014 school year. We will provide more information regarding the sports officials registration process in the coming months. If you are a member of Texas High School Basketball Officials Association (THSBOA) or Lone Star High School Softball Umpires Association (LSHSSUA)(formerly UILSO Softball) or are a Swimming or Diving official, registration is currently open.
